DBCC Launches STEM Education-Based Learn to Row

Generously funded by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan through The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Legacy Funds, the DBCC’s new pilot STEM Learn-to-Row programming will accommodate up to 50 middle and high school students who attend public and non-public schools in Detroit, Dearborn, and Harper Woods; specifically youth consistently underrepresented in the sport of rowing.

A new integrated curriculum has been designed to align with national STEM education core competencies and rowing principles found in kinesiology and physics (e.g. force, velocity, resistance, and momentum). Scheduled on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, the classes consist of learning the rowing stroke on indoor rowing machines, on-the-water training in a rowing ‘barge’ to get the feel of the water and the oar, and finally, rowing together in actual racing shells that competitive rowers use. Three, eight week sessions will be held during 2019-2020. Click here for more information about enrollment.
